Celebrating Heroes to Our Heroes: A Community's Commitment to Veterans

This Thanksgiving season, Veterans Outreach of Wisconsin (VOW) honored its ongoing commitment to serve those who have served us through their incredible Hero’s to Our Hero’s initiative. This initiative, designed to provide food, resources, and a sense of belonging to homeless and at-risk veterans, has once again showcased the unwavering support of a compassionate community.

The cornerstone of this year’s efforts included a Turkey Drive on November 9th, where generous donations poured in to ensure that no veteran would go without a warm holiday meal. Contributions came from far and wide, highlighting the power of collective action:

  • Meijer Team of Pleasant Prairie and Grand Rapids donated a remarkable $5,000, enabling VOW to secure crucial supplies for those in need.
  • Kroger made a substantial impact by contributing 10,477 lbs of fresh produce, emphasizing the importance of providing nutritious meals.
  • DeltaHawk stepped up with an impressive 800 lbs of food, further enhancing the resources available to veterans.
  • Salmon Unlimited donated 90 turkeys, ensuring that Thanksgiving tables were full of gratitude and delicious food.

Local organizations, including Mt. Pleasant, Burlington, Union Grove, and the Pleasant Prairie VFW Post 7308, played an essential role in rallying the community to support the drive.

The initiative culminated in VOW’s Annual Thanksgiving Meal, a heartfelt event that welcomed many homeless veterans to enjoy a warm, festive meal in the company of others. This gathering not only addressed hunger but also fostered connection and hope, reminding veterans that they are not forgotten.

The success of Hero’s to Our Hero’s underscores the importance of community-driven efforts. Every donation, whether it was fresh produce, financial support, or a single turkey, came together to create a season of abundance for veterans who deserve our deepest gratitude.

VOW’s work doesn’t stop with the holidays. Initiatives like these are part of a year-round effort to uplift veterans, providing not just meals but a pathway to dignity and self-reliance.
